Deep Roots

A Legacy Sunk Deep in Sri Lankan Soil

Traditional gem mining in Sri Lanka is a highly collaborative craft, passed down through generations. Unlike modern industrial open-cast mining which destroys vast landscapes, Sri Lankan gem extraction is primarily traditional, eco-friendly pit mining (called 'Gem Pits' or 'Pathal'). This method minimizes ecological impact and preserves agricultural lands.

From the deep vertical timber-reinforced shafts to the woven bamboo baskets used to wash the gem-bearing gravel (Illam), every step is a testament to the relationship between the miners and the earth.

The Path of a Ceylon Gemstone

Sinking the Shaft

1. Sinking the Shaft

Miners dig a vertical pit (Pathala) reaching depths from 10 to over 50 feet. The walls are meticulously reinforced with local logs (usually Kekilla timber) and packed foliage to prevent collapses in the muddy terrain.

Excavating the Illam

2. Excavating the 'Illam'

Once they reach the alluvial gem-bearing gravel layer, known locally as the 'Illam', miners tunnel horizontally using hand tools. The gravel is packed into baskets and hoisted to the surface.

Washing the Gravel

3. Washing the Gravel

The excavated gravel is washed in nearby waterways. Using circular conical baskets (Watti) made of bamboo, miners rotate the gravel in the water. The lighter sand washes away, leaving behind heavy minerals and rough gemstones.

Sifting & Selection

4. The Sifting & Selection

In a suspenseful moment of sorting, the expert miner sifts through the remaining heavy concentrate (Dulla). The rough corundum (sapphires, rubies) is separated from common gravel by hand.
